INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police fatally shot an Indianapolis man who was holding a female at knifepoint after fleeing an earlier shooting and forcing his way into an apartment, authorities said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday afternoon, and the female wasn’t injured. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the suspect on Wednesday as Elijah Hakiem Radford, 45.
Officers responding to reports of shots fired outside a business found a woman with apparent gunshot wounds and a rifle at the scene. Another person who intervened in the apparent domestic dispute suffered bite marks, according to Chief Christopher Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The wounded woman was later hospitalized in stable condition.
Witnesses alerted officers to a pickup truck that fled the area, leading to a miles-long pursuit after the driver eluded an attempted police traffic stop. The chase ended when Radford forced his way into an apartment where officers believe he had been living. Police said they found him holding a female at knife-point and told him multiple times to “drop the knife,” but he repeatedly refused before two officers opened fire.
The officers, with the Indianapolis and Lawrence police departments, are on administrative leave pending the standard investigations into shootings by police.
